Over the past few months, legendary singer, songwriter, and musician Phil Collins has re-released his massive catalog, culminating in a new box set reflecting on his decades-long solo career. Opposed to other projects of the same ilk, however, Collins’ intention behind the undertaking wasn’t merely to collect his work, but truly reflect on how his music has evolved over time.
The new box set from Rhino, entitled Take A Look At Me Now, was both curated and collated by Collins himself and features all of his solo work up until the current day. His eight solo albums also include demo material, live performances, and B-sides, all of which have been remastered by Nick Davis, who was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the Genesis 1970-1975 box set.
The campaign launched in January with the rerelease of 1981’s Face Value and 1993’s Both Sides. Last month, the albums Hello, I Must be Going and Dance Into the Light were officially released. His other albums will continually be released in the coming months; this boxset, however, combines them all, creating a sonic timeline for fans of Collins.
Conceptually, the boxset centers around the evolution of Collins’ style and sound throughout the years. To add to this idea of the passage of time, Collins has recreated the poses from his album covers for new photos that go along with the reissues. Listeners can both see and hear the musical progression in his work, both live and in the studio.
